The 15th Apollo Astronaut Alfred Worden dies
The American Space Agency (NASA) announced one of the astronauts for the 15th Apollo mission, Alfred M. Worden, died at the age of 88, on Wednesday (3/18).
Worden is known to run the 15th Apollo mission along with two other NASA astronauts, David Scott and James B. Irwin in 1971 and spent more than 295 hours in space.
"I am very sad to hear that astronaut Apollo Al (nickname Alfred) Worden has died. Al is an American hero whose achievements will never be forgotten. My prayers for his family and friends" wrote NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine on NASA's official website.
Before joining NASA, Worden was a colonel pilot instructor in the US Air Force. Then, he switched professions to become an astronaut in 1966.
When he first joined NASA, he was appointed as a senior researcher at the NASA Ames Research Center, California, as quoted by CNN.
In 1975, Worden decided to retire from NASA and founded his own space company called Maris Worden Aerospace Inc. Worden is also trusted as BF Vice President Goodrich Aerospace of Brecksville, Ohio.
Worden also wrote a collection of poems which he merged into a book called "Hello Earth: Greetings from Endeavor" in 1974, a children's book called "I Want to Know About a Flight to the Moon" in the same year.
In addition, he also wrote a memoir entitled "Falling to Earth" in 2011.
Worden often appears on children's television shows titled "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood". In this event, he provides education to children related to space.
"His appearance on the show Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, clearly sparked the desire of many children to pursue careers as astronauts and exploration leaders in the future," concluded Bridenstine.
