At least 20 Saudi Princes Arrested for Allegedly Plotting a Coup
"Purge" among Saudi royal families is reported to continue, after the arrest of three influential princes, including King Salman's younger brother Prince Ahmed, for allegedly plotting a coup against the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS).
Middle East Eye reports that currently at least 20 princes have been arrested on charges of involvement in the coup attempt.
Some princes known to have been captured by Saudi authorities on the charge include former Crown Prince Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, head of Army Intelligence and Security Agency Prince Nayef bin Ahmed, and Mohammed bin Nayef's half-brother Prince Nawaf.
Shortly after the arrest, MBS ordered the royal princes to tweet their loyalty to him. Three of them have already done it.
According to regional sources quoted by Reuters, MbS accused the princes of having contact with foreign powers, including the United States (US) and others, to stage a coup.
Reuters quoted sources as saying King Salman himself signed an arrest warrant. They claim that his mental condition is good. King Salman is known to suffer from dementia, which affects memory, speech and other thinking abilities.
In 2017, MbS arrested up to 500 royal families and Saudi Arabian businessmen on corruption charges. However, this latest "cleansing" action had a greater impact on the stability of the kingdom.
Prince Nayef and Prince Ahmed are the two most influential figures among the royal family. Both names have been consistently mentioned by other senior sources in the royal family about the possibility of replacing the crown prince because dissatisfaction with his absolute rule is increasing in the kingdom.
